Villanelle for My Best Friend

I knew we would be best friends from the start;
the day I invited you home to eat,
I wanted to share spirit, soul, and heart.

That nightmare when my ex left me with no car,
you were willing to satisfy my need;
I knew that we were best friends from the start.

When we laughed and played until it was dark,
savoring oneness of mind, wordless, sweet,
we began to share spirit, soul, and heart.

Though time and space have flung out cruel darts
of distance, a separating ravine,
I know that we were best friends from the start.

Across the vast continent, miles apart,
we live in silent solitude and free,
yet still are sharing spirit, soul, and heart.

As years ascend, ancient oaks in the park
lift full branches, days crackling as dry leaves;
remember we were best friends from the start,
forever sharing spirit, soul, and heart.

The time has ended

The time has ended,
     the time of our friendship,
Too good to last,
Too intense to survive,
     a summer past,
     a memory now distant.
My eyes
     through hot tears
     have opened to reality,
But the sting of pain will disappear
     ...tomorrow.
I will forget,
As you already have, long ago,
Like a beautiful fairy tale
     when the book has closed.

And the next thing you know
     a new morning has dawned.

Time erases

time
erases the memory
of me
from his mind
the good times
we shared
mutual feelings
of respect
and admiration
are dim now
many months have passed
busy days
other people
fill his life
I am too far away
and very much
alone

Tonight she graduates

Tonight
She graduates--
My Cheryl, my Lynn.
Tonight--yes, tonight
I am here, she is there.
I share her joy
With a soft nostalgia
Remembering
Dreaming
Hoping
Praying for her--

For prayers are about all
That we have left
To share.

Thank you for your friendship

Thank you for
          your friendship--

Though I may never tell you
     how much
          it has meant to me.

I have decided to accept you
     as you are--
          without pretense,
or without trying to change you.

For you are you--
whether or not we think alike--
     and I admire you
                for what you are.
