Introduction
After the final post-divorce court date, Juliana and Ashley move to California to begin life with Lina Reiter, who moves from San Francisco to Alameda. Ashley must adjust to a new school culture different from that of north central Texas, where she has spent half of her life. Juliana must seek gainful employment outside the comfortable security of the familiar economic environment of the past eight years. Lina, too, has inevitable adjustments to make by living across the bay from her beloved city—and away from Howard Davidson.
Both apart from Lina and alongside Lina, Juliana encounters and resolves a variety of personal and professional issues. Juliana and Ashley both lose their jobs. Both experience health crises. Lina’s son Willard and his friend Amy Lake move from North Carolina and stay with Lina and Juliana. Ashley’s boyfriend Anthony becomes a permanent guest.
Juliana knows, too, she must also deal with the church, even though she has long since become secure in her personal belief system. Juliana and Lina become heavily involved with the local Kinship chapter—different names, different faces, but the same “family” that had become an irrevocable part of Juliana’s life. They remain unmoved from their position as church members.
Although the lesbian community that existed on Prodigy and America Online during Juliana’s coming out has long since vanished, her occasional visits to the lesbian bulletin boards and chat rooms reveal that the story is eternal—only the names and faces have changed. Now, however, Juliana has become the nurturer instead of the seeker to be nurtured.
Lina would opt for marriage to Juliana in a heartbeat, despite Juliana’s verbosity on polyfidelity and autonomy. But life goes on as Juliana makes unexpected discoveries about her life and the players in it. At long last, the one person in the world—the only one who can truly assure Juliana’s happiness—appears. That is the real Juliana Harvard. Juliana’s wings are unfolded and ready to fly. Juliana is no longer a submissive Suburban Married Lady, but an independent, mature capable woman, who is a Simply Magnificent Lesbian!
