Status of Linda and Neighborhood

Posted on May 21, 2023 by Jacquie

Linda had a splendid optical follow up at Batra Vision. Since her cataract surgery in 2020, she has 20/20 vision with NO glasses! No sign of glaucoma, no retinal damage. Her eyes are perfect now!

Updates on family stuff:

Our daughter-in-law Sharon was taken to the E.R. on Sunday, immediately diagnosed with Afib but also complications of her carotid arteries, possible stroke.

I had a nice phone convo with Scott this afternoon, got to say “hi” to Ayden and Liam. Liam, of course, did not converse with me but Ayden did. He sounds so grown up! He had just finished his Taekwondo session today.

Linda is spending more time outside, trying to work in the yard. Of course, I have to help her get in and out of the house. She wants the independence of riding around the yard on her scooter so I have to help her with the oxygen tanks.

I’m working feverishly to get the paperback format of Adventist Vegetarian Diabetics, 2nd Edition done as soon as I can, since the Kindle format will be released tomorrow [May 17].

Who needs to watch soap operas when one lives in a colorful neighborhood like mine?!? The woman across the street from me has a sweet little dog named Buster, a grown special needs son who lives with her, and a boyfriend who stays at their house most of the time. She has spinal stenosis and is in a lot of pain all the time. I don’t see her outside much but today she was weeding in her front yard and I went over to talk to her.

Our next door neighbors, the lesbian couple who moved in a year ago, are in the process of splitting up. Debbie, the one who talks to us the most, just had surgery for skin cancer on her face. Renee, the partner, went on a cruise a few weeks ago and lied to Debbie, said she was visiting her sick sister in Portland. Now Renee has COVID on the day she was supposed to be moving out of Debbie’s house.

Another elder lesbian across the street had knee replacement surgery and I see people coming in and out of her house bringing her stuff.

A gay male couple down the street divorced 2 1/2 years ago, one of them moved out. The other one (Tom) is bipolar and has gotten worse. I had not seen him out for several months though his car was in the driveway. So last week I saw Dale who has moved back into the house, told me Tom had to be put in assisted living so Dale sold Tom’s car and took the house back though they still co-own it.

My lesbian friend Elizabeth who lives a block away in the other direction had a 20-year-old cat who died a few months ago and is estranged from her 20-something daughter. When she moved here a few years ago, she had just split up with her partner who she had been with for 20 years. She’s a retired teacher of deaf children and had a legal service dog in the classroom, so the dog retired when Elizabeth did and that’s how Elizabeth can get away with having 2 dogs.

Linda worked a long time in the yard today, planted several new plants and I helped her dump potting soil into the planters. Emily was very content to sit in the sun in her stroller and sleep. So after we came in, I made a salad for supper, then I baked brownies and made strawberry mousse.

May 19 – I’m thankful for water, electricity, and internet. And affordable insulin, and that I don’t have to use it today.

Today (May 21) is our anniversary of officially moving into Our Retirement Home. We are also celebrating one year of Linda’s survival from her hospitalization and intubation in 2022.
