Fasting: March 2022

Posted on March 7, 2022March 30, 2022 by Jacquie

84-hr. fast, beginning after supper on Thursday night (March 3) and ending with break-fast on Monday morning (March 7)

I’m 30 hours in to my 84-hour fast. I got a little hungry at suppertime, while I was fixing food for Linda and Emily. But I got over it. I’m having coffee with heavy cream in the mornings but only water or herbal tea the rest of the day. I’m taking only the prescription pills (with water) for these 3 days and my CBD:THC at night and a pinch of Himalayan pink salt. Yum.

I’ve lost 3 lbs in the first 36 hrs.! I know it’s primarily water weight but to see that number on the scales is very encouraging. Fasting BG was 119 this morning. Yesterday morning it was 150 (yikes!). So it’s obvious (to me) that I *really* need this extended fast. I measured my ketones at bedtime last night and it was 2.8 (0.5-3.0 is the “sweet spot”), so that’s encouraging, too. Bedtime BG was 110 mg/dL.

End of second full day (Saturday night). I’m so disappointed that my blood sugar has not gone down that much. It actually went up after I had my coffee with cream. I think next time I’ll not have coffee at all but drink Earl Grey tea for the caffeine. I also discovered (when I went to take my PM prescription meds) that I failed to take my AM prescription meds. **heavy sigh** Measured ketones at bedtime: 3.0. Bedtime BG: 94 mg/dL.

Sunday fasting BG: 82 mg/dL. It seems silly to call it that since every BG (since Friday morning) was fasting! So I will go ahead and have my coffee with heavy cream. I need to spend time and energy helping change our bed linens. And change Emily’s bedding, too. Bedtime BG: 95 mg/dL. Ketones: 5.3

Break-fast at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, with my usual bacon and eggs. And coffee with heavy cream! Fasting BG was 98 mg/dL. Post-prandial at 1 hr. was 127 mg/dL, at 2 hr. was 102 mg/dL. Had steak for supper. Bedtime BG was 117 mg/dL. Ketones 3.0.

For the rest of March through April 14 (Maundy Thursday), my intent is to eat carnivore, which I hope will make it easier to stay under 20 grams total carbs per day.

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)

This class of pharmaceuticals includes Nexium, a heartburn relief medication that both Linda and I are/were taking. We were told by David, Linda’s physical therapist, that Nexium reduces the effectiveness of other medications and should be taken several hours before or after eating when we normally take other medications. So we immediately separated out the Nexium to be taken mid-afternoon. Except that I left the small pill container, with one Nexium for each day, behind my other pill containers, with the intention to only take one if I actually experienced heartburn.

For the past two weeks, I have taken only one Nexium! So I have effectively stopped taking Nexium.
