Fasting: April 2022

Thursday, March 31, 2022

I’m planning another 84-hr. fast, beginning tonight after supper and lasting until break-fast/brunch on Monday, April 4.

This time, I have set out only my prescription meds (AM and PM) which are all small pills that I can take with water. Speaking of water, I will be sure to drink plenty of water—especially whenever I feel “hungry.” I will continue to check my blood glucose several times a day and will check ketones at bedtime. I will not drink coffee with cream this time but will drink Moroccan Mint Green Tea and/or Earl Grey black tea for the caffeine.

I resolved to not take any insulin in the three days before beginning my fast. The last date I took insulin was 3/23/2022. However, with a fasting blood glucose this morning of 162 mg/dL, I relented and shot up 22 units of Humulin N, which just brought my numbers into the 80s.

I am still continuing with my carnivore diet for Lent (until April 14) but will have a lighter supper on Thursday evening (just cottage cheese and sugar-free gelatin).

I checked ketones at bedtime, just to get a baseline, and the score was 0.7, clearly not in ketosis yet. But I will be!

Friday, April 1, 2022

I began my weekend fast last night after supper (which was about 7:30), which was really just like a regular intermittent fasting, with nothing except water after supper. This morning I took only my prescription meds (thyroid, blood pressure, etc.) with water. I made breakfast for Linda and Emily, then I sat down with a cup of hot tea.

Yes, I’m somewhat hungry but I know it will pass. I will probably drink a lot of water today. I have a small container of Himalayan pink salt on my desk and will take a pinch once in a while so I will get my electrolytes and not get headaches. I already feel increased cognition and energy. I’m keeping busy with web client work and blogging (!).

Fasting blood glucose this morning was 149 mg/dL and at 2:00 p.m. it was 160 mg/dL. I know now that is normal because the liver is pouring more glycogen into the blood. Two hours later, it was 121 mg/dL. At suppertime, it was 110 mg/dL. At bedtime, my blood glucose was 107 mg/dL, and my blood ketones score was 1.4.

Saturday, April 2, 2022 (Liam’s 10th birthday)

Fasting blood glucose was 125 mg/dL. My weight is down 1.2 lbs. Hunger has subsided. I made breakfast for Linda and Emily and was not even tempted to take a “taste.” Drinking Earl Grey tea while watching food videos.

In the afternoon, I walked with Emily to the duckpond where we sat in the sunshine and I read while Emily slept. When I got back home, my blood glucose was 73 mg/dL. I had Tazo Wild Sweet Orange tea and watched Beat Diabetes videos.

I made rice for Linda’s supper and Emily had her usual ground lamb homemade dog food. Then I colored while I watched Dateline and Grey’s Anatomy.

Bedtime blood glucose was 69 mg/dL and ketones score was 2.6. I’m definitely in ketosis!

Sunday, April 3, 2022

I had a really rough night. In spite of taking my CBD/THC tincture, I couldn’t fall asleep. It was like having Restless Leg Syndrome only with my whole body! I even got up at 3-something and went to the living room to check my blood sugar (it was 73 mg/dL). I took a 2.5 mg cannabis-infused mint. I did sleep off and on and woke up (for the day) at 8-something but stayed in bed until 10. When I sat down at my desk to take my AM prescription meds, I saw that I did not take my PM meds last night, which included tramadol! And that was the reason for my agitation all night!

My fasting blood sugar was 92 mg/dL and my weight was down 4.5 lbs. (from the start of the fast). Today is Day 3 and I plan to break my fast with breakfast/brunch tomorrow. I made breakfast for Linda and Emily then sat down at my desk with a cup of hot Earl Grey tea. I did laundry and listened to a live presentation by Dr. Eric Westman.

I checked my blood sugar mid-afternoon and it was 42 mg/dL (!) so I took one glucose tablet, checked a half hour later and it was 60 mg/dL.

After making supper for Linda and Emily, I took my PM meds, put out meds for next week, drank a La Croix, colored while I watched Dateline. Then I put washed clothes into the dryer, rinsed dishes and ran dishwasher, brushed teeth, then settled in to color some more and watch more Dateline and Grey’s Anatomy.

At bedtime, my blood glucose was 68 mg/dL and my ketone score was 6.7.

Monday, April 4, 2022

Fasting blood glucose was 60 mg/dL. I have lost 5.2 lbs. I had my regular breakfast of bacon, egg, and brewed coffee with heavy cream. I still have loads of energy and was able to do a day’s work for web clients.

At bedtime, my blood glucose was 79 mg/dL and ketone score was 5.4.

Tuesday, April 5, 2022

Two days post-fast. Fasting blood glucose is 82 mg/dL. Bedtime blood glucose is 95 mg/dL and ketone score is 3.6, so it’s going down but I’m still in ketosis.

I have 10 more days of Lent, of giving up chocolate. But I think I’ll be able to do this 84-hr. fast again, either in May or June.

fasting, insulin injections, tramadol
