COVID-19 Week 3

Posted on April 5, 2020 by Jacquie

Sunday, March 29: When my front doorbell rang at 11-ish this morning, I thought it was an Amazon delivery—but there stood Daughter #1 with a paper grocery bag in her hand. I had to step over Emily’s poop that I hadn’t picked up. And I went to the bedroom to get Emily to come out and see “Auntie Lisa.” It was so strange to not be able to hug her (just “air hugs” today). She had brought some homemade soup and a salad with deviled eggs and a little bottle of roll-on anti-viral/bacterial essential oils for when I have a scratchy throat.

“Oh, you came out of your county!” were my first words to her. Yes, they were all suffering from “cabin fever” and were just out for a drive since Alex can’t even go the park anymore.

Monday, March 30: Lisa called this morning because Alex wanted to talk to Lola. I spent over half an hour on the phone with him, listening, trying to understand what he was saying. At the end, he just put down the phone and walked away (so Lisa said)!

We drove into Alameda early afternoon for a pick-up order at the Target store in Alameda Landing. First time during this crisis (though we had done a couple of pick-up orders in the past). Then mailed a letter in the drop boxes outside the Alameda post office. All simple things but significant in the time of isolation. It goes against everything in me that I’ve learned to do in the past several years to through away perfectly good reusable grocery bags! But I did. I put away everything, threw away everything else, then washed my hands before getting sodas out for Linda and me.

Jeannie messaged me with information about a potential new web client. Arlene wants to know if I can convert her PDF books to ebooks for Kindle to be downloaded from her website. I told her I’d have to research it. Then she texted me later (after I had spent time researching it) to say that PHEC would be able to create the files that she could upload to her website. I texted her back to say that creating the Kindle-friendly files is only half of it. The other half is explaining to the reader how to get the files from their computer (or phone) onto their Kindle.

Wednesday, April 1: Ugh! I started this month with a fasting BG of 155 mg/dL. That is definitely not acceptable! So I shot up a syringe-full of basal insulin and ate a normal breakfast. By 4:20 p.m. my BG was 117.

We got our first-time shipment from Target.com, arrived by USPS in a Target box. Now we know how it can be done. It was all non-food products.

At 6:30 p.m., we had our first Zoom video session with Alex! So now we know that can be done, too.

Thursday, April 2: Birthday of Grandson #2 so I posted his pic on my Timeline. He got his present from “the California grandmas” last week.

Friday, April 3: Second “Pick Up & Go” order from Safeway, Alameda. They were “out of stock” on a few crucial items, and a jerk parked too close to our van so the passenger side back door was not available to open. The delivery person put the gallon carton of milk on the bed where it fell off and got a hole in it and was leaking by the time we got home, so I had to carry it in first and dump it in the sink until I could get the rest of the bags in. I saw on the receipt that they charged 10 cents per bag. I think the bags should be free since we are not allow to use our own reusable bags. There was a $4.95 delivery fee, like last time. I don’t begrudge that, but somehow I just bristle at the bag charge. There was NO kefir in stock so Linda decided to try “cultured” buttermilk instead. Also, no Ortega taco sauce so she decided to try the Taco Bell Mild Sauce. And there was NO yogurt available. NONE.

Saturday, April 4: Today ends Week 3 of the Bay Area counties’ shelter-in-place/lockdown, though it feels like 3 years! I slept until after 11 o’clock. Then discovered that Laren wants to call me (yes, a voice phone call) at 2 p.m. I might as well suck it up and do it. I didn’t find any live-streamed church services I wanted to watch so spent the rest of the afternoon working on Adventist Vegetarian Diabetics.
