Measuring Ketones, First 10 (actually 8)

Posted on June 28, 2020 by Jacquie

Friday, June 19, 2020: I received my new KetoCoach Blood Ketone Monitor starter kit today! I took time to read all the instructions thoroughly and then check the date and time settings on the meter. I figured out how to insert a lancet (30G) into the lancing device. Then I decided to check my ketones at the same time that I check my bedtime blood glucose (since that is the time of day that is most likely going to be consistent on a day-to-day basis. It looks like .5-1.5 mmol/l is “light nutritional ketosis” and 1.5-3.0 mmol/l is actual nutritional ketosis.

Tonight’s numbers: bedtime blood glucose 113 mg/dL, ketones 1.4 mmol/l.

Saturday, June 20, 2020: Bedtime blood glucose 140 mg/dL, ketones 1.7 mmol/l

Sunday, June 21, 2020: Bedtime blood glucose 116 mg/dL, ketones 2.3 mmol/l

Monday, June 22, 2020: Bedtime blood glucose 110 mg/dL, ketones 1.2 mmol/l. I’ve had a stressful day, getting bullied by Dr. Adam Nally on Facebook, close to tears. I think I’ll stay off Facebook for a few days! Maybe forever. I posted this in my very private group, Jacquie’s Chronic Pain/Depression Friends:

I’ve had a really crappy day, and this group is the ONLY place I can even say that! Started off with bacon cooked too long and egg not cooked long enough, and sriarcha sauce splattered all over the kitchen. Progress for web client was thwarted at every attempt to work on it. BG has been too high, ketones have been too low. I’ve been bullied on Facebook (but that’s my own fault for expressing my opinions!). and I’ve had writer’s block all day. The shows I wanted to watch on nbc-dot-com weren’t on, and my colored pencils kept breaking. No, there’s nothing anyone can do to help me. Thank you for letting me vent here!

Tuesday, June 23, 2020: Today I decided to “withdraw” from Facebook. That means I will not read, react to, respond to, or share any posts or videos about #45, #BLM, veganism, or COVID-19. Too much stress! Part of withdrawing from Facebook means I won’t be posting any more “I’m thankful for…” posts, either. I need to treat Facebook like watching a TV show. Just watch and not interact with the characters. I would stay off Facebook completely if it weren’t for the groups that I admin. I only know 3 people older than me and they are all healthier than I am. What gives?!? Just for the record, what I *will* respond to are posts featuring children and animals and other things that make me smile!

I had chopped onion in my egg this morning and my BG skyrocketed up to 180 mg/dL! That really sucks, you know that? I had Pain Management online at 4-5 p.m. and I felt relaxed after that.

I checked my BG at 6:00 p.m. before I took my PM pills with 5 oz. almond milk and it was 100 mg/dL. I didn’t eat anything else (I got distracted) and checked again just before I ate supper at 7:30 p.m. and BG was 127 mg/dL. That tells me that something in my PM pills is spiking my BG! I checked BG 2.5 hours later (bedtime) and it was 153 mg/dL, telling me that something I ate spiked me again! Yet, when I checked ketones, it was 2.4 mmol/l, meaning I’m in ketosis. Go figure!

Wednesday, June 24, 2020: bedtime blood glucose 134 mg/dL, blood ketones 2.9 mmol/l. That was on the second try. The first try gave me “Er 2 Used or contaminated test strip.” Yikes! I just wasted an extra dollar. Well, all I can say is, “I’m thankful that my glucometer and test strips have $0 co-pay!”

Thursday, June 25, 2020: bedtime blood glucose 127 mg/dL, blood ketones 3.4 mmol/l

Friday, June 26, 2020: began a 3-day (72-hr) fast (after supper last night). Bedtime blood glucose 97 mg/dL, blood ketones 2.5 mmol/l

Saturday, June 27, 2020: This is the last day to measure ketones for now (because I’m out of ketone test strips). I have more on order. Bedtime blood glucose 90 mg/dL, blood ketones “Er 3 Not enough sample (blood) on the strip.” Well, I’m SOL because that was my last strip! Dang.
