72-hour Fast Labor Day Weekend

Posted on September 6, 2020 by Jacquie

I didn’t plan far enough ahead for a 3-day fast. I had thought about doing a fast over Labor Day weekend, but I didn’t get serious about it until my blood sugar was higher than I wanted at bedtime on Thursday night (162) so I shot up some basal insulin (45u).

On Friday morning, my fasting blood glucose was 135–still higher than I wanted, so a shot up another 35u of basal insulin, after having begun my 72-hour fast after supper on Thursday night.

By mid-afternoon, my BG was down to 100 so that was okay. But by early evening (before what would have been supper), it was down to 46! Definitely time for a glucose tablet! After a “supper” of 1 cup of beef bone broth, my BG was 71 so that was good. However, by bedtime it was down to 52. I checked ketones which was 1.0 (just barely in ketosis). I had a cup of chamomile lavender tea and another glucose tablet.

Fasting blood glucose was 69, so I decided to have coffee with 1 T. heavy cream (instead of black coffee). By afternoon, BG was 99–so far, so good. But by evening, BG was 43. I had “run out of” glucose tablets. I knew I had another vial somewhere but couldn’t find it, so I had 1/4 c. frozen strawberries and 1/4 c. frozen blueberries with my “supper” of bone broth.

Shelly (Millard) Booth died this afternoon, so that was upsetting to find out.

By bedtime, my BG was 65 and ketones 0.6 (not in ketosis). Well, of course not, with having had 1/2 c. of frozen berries!

When I woke up I had been dreaming about my project of putting medical “equipment” in the empty plastic drawer unit that I confiscated from Linda’s discard pile. I was also dreaming that Linda was looking for a new coffee maker and couldn’t decide between Cuisinart and Fiskars brand (which, of course, didn’t make any sense!). But apparently I was talking about all of this before I was fully awake, and Linda was trying to wake me up to go check my blood sugars. I was laughing and being silly and that didn’t help at all. I was awake enough to take my thyroid pill. And, finally, awake enough to get up and go pee and then go to the living room where my meter was.

My fasting BG was 33! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a number that low. I took it twice to make sure (the second time was 31, but I wrote down 33 in my log). I finally found my stash of glucose tablets, so I took one. Twenty minutes later I was up to 51 (exactly where 1 glucose tablet should have taken me!). I took one more glucose tablet, and 20 minutes later I was up to 65, so I had coffee with 2 T. heavy cream and settled in to watch EKM with Linda on her computer.

After EKM, at 1:25 I checked my blood again, and it was 47. So I took one glucose tablet and ate a cheese stick (because I was also taking my AM meds). At 1:50, my BG was 76–exactly where it should have been.

I began planning what we’re going to have for supper (when I will break my fast) and I decided on salmon patties (from canned wild Alaskan salmon) and low-carb creamed spinach (from a new recipe that I haven’t tried before).

Before supper, 48. After supper, 95 at 1 hr and 83 at 2 hrs. Finally, after 3 days of struggling, I had the perfect blood glucose!

Lesson Learned: I need to not shoot up insulin right before a fast! I would recommend (to my future self) to Intermittent Fast (with NO insulin) for at least 3 days before a 3-day fast. Maybe next time I can go 72 hours + 16 hrs = 88 hrs. Hmm.
