Trying a 60-hr. fast

Posted on January 1, 2019 by Jacquie

After eating haphazardly during the holidays, I’ve decided I need to do a 60-hr. cleansing extended fast, from my family dinner on Saturday night (Dec. 29) until my first meal of the day on New Year’s Day.

Sunday, December 30

When I got up this morning (well, almost noon), I turned on the coffee (half a pot left from yesterday) and checked my blood glucose and weight. It was 133.4 lbs., representing 5 lbs. of carelessness with my diet. After bedtime insulin last night, fasting blood glucose this morning was 112 mg/dL. I took my AM meds with half-and-half (my usual 4 oz.=5.2g carbs), then poured my coffee, using only heavy cream in it. I cooked fried eggs with cheese for Linda and Emily, then settled in at my desk with my coffee on the warmer. It lasted me until past 4 o’clock. I took Emily out for a walk, brought in the trash can from yesterday, and took a Mountain Dew to Linda (at her request). By late afternoon, my blood glucose was 110 mg/dL.

At supper time, I took my PM meds (as usual) and heated up leftover pot roast for Linda and Emily. After Linda and Emily finished supper, Linda colored my hair. Then I took a shower, brushed my teeth, and settled in back at my desk with a cup of hot chamomile with lavender tea. I have my little jar of rock Himalayan pink salt and “snack” on 2 or 3 crystals dissolving in my mouth.

The first day of a fast is always the hardest. You don’t realize how much of your thoughts during your waking hours is about food. Buying food, preparing food, collecting recipes. And checking all those Facebook groups and your Newsfeed. There are lots and lots of recipes! In the “Obesity Code/Diabetes Code” group, I posted that I was starting a 60-hr. fast. No one commented, but (so far) 29 people have seen it and liked or loved it. So that makes me feel like I have that much silent support.

Bedtime blood glucose: 93 mg/dL.

Monday, December 31

I got up at 10:30 this morning. Weight=132.4 lbs. Fasting blood glucose=80 mg/dL. The hair color was supposed to be “soft black” but turned out to have reddish-brown highlights, which looks great on the part of my hair that is still black, but on the gray parts from the roots out to about 3 inches, it is bright red!

Linda made a fresh pot of coffee, and I fixed fried eggs with cheese for Linda and Emily. I put a pat of butter in my coffee today (along with the heavy cream). Yes, technically, it’s not strict fasting when you introduce dairy. However, as Dr. Fung says, if some adjustments need to be made to keep you fasting, then do it. My coffee was finished by 3 o’clock, as I’m working away on a major web client project. I’m not at all hungry now. Even when I am typing recipes for my web client! The rock Himalayan pink salt tricks my mind into thinking I am eating or have eaten something savory and yummy!

Celebrated New Year’s Eve with sparkling water. Bedtime blood glucose: 88 mg/dL.

Tuesday, January 1

Fasting blood glucose: 82 mg/dL. Weight=131.4 lbs. 38 people have liked my post in the “Obesity Code/Diabetes Code” group. I took my usual AM meds, made my coffee with just heavy cream, and broke my fast with 5 slices of bacon. I still made fried eggs with cheese for Linda and Emily and gave Emily one slice of bacon.

I posted on Facebook:

I have completed my 60-hr. fast. I lost 2 lbs., and kept my BG in a range of 80-112 mg/dL, ending with a FBG of 82 mg/dL. I didn’t get hungry, had no headaches, and feel both relaxed and energized!

My plan is to continue the rest of this week with 16:8 Intermittent Fasting.

blood glucose, extended fasting, fasting, weight

It was really interesting reading this. Congratulations on following through and doing a good job with this. I did about a 20 hour fast last week and found it really easy after I wasn’t hungry for a while. I only had water to drink and just took a couple of my medications that didn’t need water. I have also done the 18 6 fast several times this week and have done quite well with that. I am sort of afraid to do this too often because I know that your hair can start falling out and all kinds of things can happen. I also know that it is very healing for your body as your body starts to heal itself of all kinds of things when you do an extended fast
particular. I’m not doing it for weight loss although that would be nice, but I am doing it primarily to help with the insulin resistance and to give my stomach a rest. I really feel good when I do this. Thank you for sharing your experience and I hope others will do the same.
